How to get a 5 on the AP Physics 1 Exam

Ever wondered how to get a 5 on the AP Physics 1 exam? Well, you’re in the right place. The AP Physics test is definitely one of the harder AP tests, but with the right preparation material and time, it is possible to score a 5.

Why take AP Physics?

The AP Physics 1 course is definitely a beneficial course for many high schoolers. Anyone interested in physics, engineering, or a STEM related course should take this course. Oftentimes, the first 2-3 months of the course are relatively slow paced with a focus on the rudimentary concepts while the remaining months are fast paced and build off the previous units. Throughout the year, you will learn of different types of motions, mechanics, and waves that make up the world around us.

About the test:

The test was recently updated and is now much more conceptual versus the previous test, which had an emphasis on formulas and calculations. The new test is 180 minutes with 50 multiple choice questions and 5 free responses. In the multiple-choice questions, there are 5 new multiselection questions, which will ask you to choose more than one correct answer. There are 90 min for each section, and you will be provided with an equation sheet and a scientific or graphing calculator that is approved by Collegeboard.

What is on the test?

Kinematics, dynamics: Newtons Laws, circular motion, gravitation, harmonic motion, momentum and impulse, work and energy, rotational motion, DC Circuits, electricity, waves, and sounds.

Step 1: Prep books

Its important to have the right prep book for success! In my opinion, the Princeton Review is by far the best prep book, with drills, free response questions, and summaries after every chapter. AP Physics is definitely not an AP that you should self-study for, as the test requires in depth knowledge of many topics and any prep book is only able to provide limited examples and practice. Below is a picture of the 2019 edition of the Princeton Review prep book.

Step 2: Make a study plan

Before you start reviewing for the exam, make sure to create a set study plan so that you can cover all the material and feel ready for the exam! If this is the only AP you are taking in a year, aim for 30 minutes each weekday and 2 to 3 hours each weekend.

Step 3: Review the material

After you get the prep book, it is important to review all of the content for the exam. Go through the entire prep book, doing all the drills and free response questions for each chapter.

Step 4: Take lots of practice tests

After you review all of the content of the exam, take practice tests to gauge how you are performing on the actual exam structure. Make sure to correct your mistakes to better understand the material.

The day before the exam day, make sure to get lots of sleep and eat a good breakfast!

Good luck studying!
